Welcome to Nurse Against Abuse: Advocating for Change

About Our Mission and Vision

Our mission is to empower individuals by sharing personal experiences and raising awareness about mental health, neurodiversity, domestic abuse, and other critical issues. We aim to create a future where every voice is heard, every life is valued, and healing is possible. Through education, support, and advocacy, we strive to break down barriers, challenge stigmas, and promote a more compassionate and understanding society. We believe in the power of storytelling and community to drive change and inspire resilience.

Healing Through Expression

Through personal experiences of mental and emotional turmoil, I discovered the freedom of sharing one's story. This journey of resilience and determination led me to explore the dynamics of coercive control and the scars it leaves behind. Our platform allows individuals to connect, share their experiences, and support one another.

Breaking the Silence

Victims are silenced far too often. Having experienced victim-blaming first-hand, the events of 2024 profoundly impacted my life, leading to a profound disillusionment with the justice system and a sense of isolation for my children and me. We found ourselves facing victim-blaming, which only compounded our struggle to process the trauma we endured. Support seemed almost nonexistent, and it was shocking to encounter a lack of awareness from those responsible for upholding the law and protecting vulnerable individuals.

In our search for solace, I realised the importance of creating a safe space—a platform where my children and I could be heard, listened to, and understood. It is crucial for those who have faced similar hardships to have a place to share their experiences and feel validated. Through this initiative, I hope to foster a community that offers support and empowerment, allowing us all to heal and find strength in one another.

About the Founder

Sister Laura began her career at a young age by joining the Air Force. She later became an Ofsted-registered childminder and qualified in Early Years from college before joining the RAF. Laura then worked in children's homes and mental health within the NHS before earning her General Nursing degree. With experience in acute medicine and primary care, she is a dedicated nurse and advocate.

As a mother of three, one of whom is diagnosed with ADHD and Autism, she explored her own potential diagnosis, ultimately leading to her late ADHD diagnosis a few years ago. Despite never struggling with mental health for over three decades, her ADHD provided drive and passion, both personally and professionally. She remains grateful for her diagnosis and the positives it brings, while understanding its impact on others through her support for her eldest son, now a teenager.

Laura found the clarity and strength to leave an abusive relationship, facing victim-blaming and police failings. Diagnosed with PTSD, she pursued a Master’s in Psychology and Neuroscience in Mental Health, now holding a postgraduate certificate and continuing her studies. Driven by an internal need to help others avoid her experiences, Sister Laura is committed to making a difference in the lives of those she serves.

Purpose

We aim to offer a safe and supportive community for those struggling with self-compassion and kindness, especially after experiencing trauma. We believe in the power of helping and supporting others and find joy in positively impacting someone else's life.

Community

Creating this platform has given me a voice again, and I hope it will do the same for others. We need a space where our experiences are validated and our pain is acknowledged. This is a place for healing and empowerment, where we can share our stories and support each other through the darkest times.

The founder's personal motivations.

Sister Laura Prince

Not long after fleeing my home with 3 children, the police failed to act on the disclosures of 4 years of domestic abuse and Child protection and common assault against minors.  In my mid-thirties, I found myself in a place where I needed to reach out to mental health services for the first time in my life.

The scars from my experiences run deep; I often felt terrorised by my mind, haunted by relentless torment. To process what I had lived through, I published "Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt." However, my healing journey was anything but straightforward.

This led to traumatisation as I recounted the abuse to 19 police officers in person alone while facing the infliction of five different investigating officers and dealing with anti-corruption units. I interacted with professionals with whom I wouldn’t feel safe, alone with my children or patients. It felt as though the one who had walked away despite the harm caused to my children and me had caused more damage than can ever be rebuilt, indifferent to the trauma they perpetuated, while those who did take action bore the scars of my suffering.

I increasingly see the pain reflected in others' eyes and empathise deeply with their struggles. Behind the mask I wear to shield others from my pain, I have become even more driven to support those who feel they have no voice. My journey has compelled me to explore the dynamics of coercive control and its lasting scars.

I hope my story encourages others to confront their battles against a societal system that too frequently fails the vulnerable. If you resonate with my experience, know that you are not alone. Together, we can advocate for a system that listens, validates, and ultimately protects those who have suffered and continue to suffer in silence.

The Founder's Personal Motivations

Living with PTSD is a relentless battle, often filled with despair. Protecting my child within the justice system can feel impossible, but my resolve to advocate for change remains unshaken.

I will never forget the day my eldest son cut his wrists or the day my middle son hid at the bottom of the stairs, terrified his stepdad had returned. Their fear mirrored my struggles with PTSD, breaking my heart. These moments fuelled my determination to fight for them, for others to understand that the justice system should protect the vulnerable any when it doesn't there are others out there surviving.
